MyPod

So this weekend I took BART into the city and figured it was a good time to dust off my iPod. I haven’t used my iPod a lot recently because when I’m driving somewhere I just listen to the radio, and other places aren’t really iPod appropriate. BART is the perfect place for iPods, and on a Saturday afternoon I saw no less than 10 people with the trademark white earphones.

But the interesting thing about listening to my iPod is that I get a kick out of listening to odd music in the middle of large crowds. I know some people are just big music fans and need their songs at all times. Others like to get pumped up by listening to just the right music to start their day. And then there are even some who just pass the time enjoying something besides the hum of the train. Me, I like hearing “I’m Walking on Sunshine” while sitting on a quiet train. I look around and imagine the song playing over the PA system. Would that large sleeping man jump to live and start hopping to the beat? Would that old couple start dancing? What about that surly looking guy staring out the window? Perhaps he’d crack a smile.

And it’s not limited to snappy dance tunes. I get the same joy from listening to Frank Sinatra croon, the Beatles bop, or Boyz II Men serenade. Transposing my feelings for a song onto random people just amuses me. And maybe that’s not unique to me.
