I have a new distraction that provides me with hours of informational entertainment (I have coined the term “infotainment” for it): Wikipedia.

Now I have been using the Wiki site for a long time, in order to research whatever pops into my head. But only recently have I started randomly searching for information on it. And it’s not just to answer questions, but also to increase my rapidly shrinking pool of knowledge.

It all started in a rather peculiar way, actually. After watching the most recent X-Men film (Last Stand), it got me reminiscing about my childhood hobbies. So I hopped on the Wiki and started popping in Marvel characters to get some information. I caught up on all sorts of storylines, and got 10 years of comic lore summarized in a neat, little package. It certainly saves me the time of reading thousands of comic books to figure out that Mutant A killed Mutant B.

After a while I had exhausted all the comic book “infotainment” (what a good word I invented), but I was still thirsty for more knowledge. So now I started Wiki-ing things like the Classics, or random scientific information. Just like I stopped reading comics 10 years ago (mostly), I stopped learning about the fancy sciences and classics when I graduated. So maybe I’ll get smarter now.

And yes, I know Wikipedia has this scary controversy over all its information being fake. But really, it’s not that bad. And if it’s wrong, I can blame it on the crazy kids who are “hacking the internet.”
