Fantasy Draft
March 30th, 2006 by Chachee
I feel really good about my draft this year…
- David Wright (NYM – 3B)
I love this guy. The more I read about him, the more I thought he’d be a steal late in the first round. I would put a small amount of money down that Wright could be better than A-Rod this year, depending on how the Mets do and health concerns. - Michael Young (Tex – SS)
At this point I could have drafted several good players, but I chose Young because a SS of his talent is hard to get. I thought about getting Tejada just to sell him off to someone else, but I couldn’t risk it. My fear with Young is that he sort of came out of nowhere to become a silent star, and he might just as easily fade away. - Chone Figgins (LAA – 2B,3B,OF)
I had Chone on my team last year, and wasn’t really planning on getting him this year. Still when he fell to me late in the 3rd round, I couldn’t pass him up, even with Carlos Beltran on the board (a player who I covet and am now in the process of trying to acquire). Figgins gives me more than enough SBs and versatility this year, although I wish he had SS eligibility. Perhaps he’ll get it during the season. - Todd Helton (Col – 1B)
Colorado slugger? Yes please. He’s having a good Spring after a slow start to 2005. He tore it up in the second half of 2005 though, and he’ll be solid all season this year. I hope… - Hideki Matsui (NYY – OF)
A consistent performer on an offensively loaded team. And he’s mad that Japan won the WBC without him. It’s Godzilla time! - Jason Varitek (Bos – C)
A player I wanted, as there are few catchers with this kind of pop. It doesn’t hurt that his teammates are Manny and Ortiz. - Vernon Wells (Tor – OF)
A revamped Toronto team’s best player. A steal this late in the draft! His average could use some work though. - Tim Hudson (Atl – SP)
I took Hudson a little earlier than I planned on taking any pitchers, but I felt it was worth it for old times’ sake. He should put up decent numbers if he stays healthy, and he could fetch a nice price on the trade market. - Ken Griffey Jr. (Cin – OF)
Comeback season in 2005. Hammered the ball at the WBC. Is it the return of Junior? There were younger outfielders available, but I had to take a chance here. - Matt Cain (SF – SP)
A young pitcher whom I like to make fun of at the sake of Giants’ fans. He could be decent. The first in my collection of young pitchers. - Chris Capuano (Mil – SP)
I liked him last year, but didn’t hold onto him. I always have a soft spot for those types of players. I also seem to be using the A’s strategy of picking up young strikeout artists. - Javier Vázquez (CWS – SP)
I expect big things from Vazquez. He’s sort of an under-looked pitcher that I like to overrate. He’s proven he can do it, and on the ChiSox, he could do it again. - Kenji Johjima (Sea – C)
I didn’t really need another catcher, but considering this was in the 13th round, I couldn’t pass it up. Apparently Johjima’s Spring numbers have some people believing that he could be a Victor Martinez, and that’s why I picked him up. Also, Varitek takes days off all the time. Good to have a backup. I also enjoy Asian players. - Scott Kazmir (TB – SP)
I was going to draft him higher, but decided to grab some other folks. Luckily Kazmir was available later on. I waited on him because he’s been having a bad Spring, but his potential is still there. - Justin Morneau (Min – 1B)
Just in case Helton falls through. And Morneau had an unlucky season last year with all his injuries and personal stuff. When he was active, he made me wish I had him. - Johnny Gomes (TB – OF)
I don’t think I’ll ever have to worry about SBs. 2 Devil Rays on 1 team? - Ervin Santana (LAA – SP)
I put him off for about 5 rounds, and still got him. He got 12 wins last season, and didn’t even start with the club. And I have to have a Santana on my team. - Adrian Béltre (Sea – 3B)
Who’d have thought a near MVP from 2004 could be taken this low in the draft. I figure when you build your team around a young 3B, it doesn’t hurt to have some extra 3Bs around. - Pedro Feliz (SF – 1B,3B,OF)
Probably the first guy I’d drop from this team, but I was uninspired and grabbed him because I wanted him last year. He’s really not that good, but his versatility is a plus. Backups for Helton, Wright, and OF. If Bonds plays the whole season, Feliz could have nice numbers. - Josh Barfield (SD – 2B)
Had to get a young rookie like this. A 2B who tore up the minors last year, and won a spot with his torrid Spring. Sounds goods to me! - Kelvim Escobar (LAA – SP,RP)
I wanted a pitcher who I could slot in my RP area. It allows me to fit more pitchers in without having to rearrange things. I’ve decided closers are too much trouble, and thus ignored them in favor of solid hitters with SBs.
