Ramblin’

I don’t really know what to say here, but I think I haven’t posted in a while. So maybe I’ll just ramble on like an old coot. But what to ramble about…

Well, how about this weather we’re having? It’s sunny one day, cold the next. Jeez, this is some crazy stuff! I guess it’s getting on towards Autumn. I like the word “Autumn” much more than “Fall.” Really, sometimes it is easier to say “Fall,” but really “Autumn” is such a better word. It kind of evokes more feelings.

Doing some research, I’ve managed to find out that “Fall” is really only used in North America now. At one point in Europe, prior to the discovery of the New World, both were used. However, after colonization, “Fall” became less common in Europe whereas people in North America kept right on using the word “Fall.” Also, “Autumn” is derived from Latin, and “Fall” is from the Germanic or Old English (they think). Thus, it is clearly Autumn in the Bay Area now

Speaking of Autumn, it’s football season again. I’m not traditionally a football fan, but following baseball so closely, it’s only natural that I got some overlap. Slowly, with this overlap, Madden football games, fantasy football and USC’s recent domination, I have grown more and more interested in the gridiron (like, for instance, did you know football used to be played on a grid?). Now, there’s still a lot I don’t know about football, and there’s even more that I just don’t care about, but I definitely follow it much more closely than I used to. I never see myself becoming the person who could argue the finer points of the 3-4 defense vs. the 4-3 defense, or even knowing what all the different penalties are.

Anyways, it’s football season. Yeah. But I have a bit of a dillemma. Actually, it’s a fairly large one. I really don’t have a team to root for in either conference. I have teams that I want to do well, but not one that I specifically follow. It probably has to do with the Raiders being very unappealing. It’s easy to develop closeness for local teams, but the Raiders do their best to make me not want that. I guess I could go for the 49ers, but they really aren’t all that great either (although I think they’re way ahead of the Raiders as an organization and team). Other teams I’m considering are places where former Trojans now play like Cincinatti, Arizona, or New Orleans. And then there’s the wild card Philadelphia Eagles, who I keep ending up with in fantasy football, and I kind of like it. So maybe for now I’ll choose all those teams, then I’m bound to get a few interesting stories every year, and some good football.

Speaking of good football, I cannot wait for DirecTV to lose its stranglehold on NFL Sunday Ticket. The fact that they are the only service allowed to air all NFL games is ridiculous. Especially since the dish is so stupid, and east coast based. I believe this is the last year they get the NFL, and then it will hopefully move to far more popular cable systems. Then maybe I will choose a team to follow completely.

Well, looks like I had things to say after all…
