Desert Island: Current TV Shows
February 20th, 2007 by Chachee
I was thinking about it the other day, and I wanted to officially declare my top 5 favorite TV shows currently on the air. I’m usually not very good at prioritizing my favorite things, but here it is.
1) Lost (ABC)
Absolutely the best show on TV. It’s movie quality production with more than 20 hours of intrigue per season. I just feel like the show’s producers care about their product just as much as I do. If I had only one show to watch each week, this would be it. And I might not mind.
2) The Office (NBC)
The #1 comedy on TV. The characters are all so flawed, but still endearing in spite of it. At the same time, the on-going plot (even if it is a tad soap-operatic) keeps me eager to watch next week’s episode. It’s a show that can provide hilarious one-liners, while still having enough plot to provoke some discussion and mystery. It just feels smarter than a standard sitcom.
3) Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi)
Yes, it’s a tad nerdy, but it is a great show. The storyline is involving and well-crafted, but sometimes the writers mind wander. It’s just a gritty series with a storyline that keeps me interested. It’s had some good twists and some great action, which makes it a sort of cheaper, sci-fi Lost. I’m not doing a good job of explaining why it’s good, it just is, and it fills my geeky needs. Also, it reminds me of Robotech.
4) Entourage (HBO)
I wanted to make this my #3, but the problem is that HBO likes to give its shows awful schedules, so Entourage is on very infrequently. The show doesn’t make me think, it just entertains me for a solid 22 minutes. And the end of every episode leaves me wanting more. It’s funny, smart, and actually makes being a rich celebrity seem like something I could see myself doing. If I told you that you could watch a funny show about people with a ridiculous amount of money, would that be something you’d be interested in?
5) 24 (FOX)
This was a tough decision, because 24 has been letting me down recently. But still, its first 3 seasons were some of the best drama on TV, and that gives it the edge over any other shows on TV. 24 is barely hanging in the top 5, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
Honorable Mentions:
CSI: Could easily fit into the #5 slot, and I’ve always considered it one of my favorite shows. The problem is that the lack of an ongoing storyline doesn’t make me excited to tune in every week.
Heroes: I kind of hold a grudge against the show because people compare it to Lost, and it’s outdrawing 24. But I do like it a lot, and it could be in the top 5 one day if it sorted out its plotholes and proved its worth over several seasons.
Scrubs: Past its prime. Sadly.
30 Rock: The new Scrubs and Arrested Development? Could be, but it’s still too new to put on the list.
How I Met Your Mother: I just don’t feel it. Love the show, but it doesn’t even come to mind when I think of my favorite shows. Probably because it’s so sit-com-y.
Psych: This is sort of a dark horse contender. I love the show. It makes me feel good, sort of like Entourage.
