Play Ball!

The 2006 baseball season has begun! Hurray!
Ah, something about the beginning of baseball season is so refreshing. Perhaps it’s that it coincides with Spring, or maybe it’s just that I love baseball. I just think baseball handles Opening Day better than other sports. Opening Day feels special, whereas the first week of the NFL just feels like any other week of football. Sure baseball gets boring for some people after it’s first 50 games, but on Opening Day, there’s just a good feelings for the fresh start.
I’ve always believed it’s best to be a fan of baseball before being a fan of your favorite team. Yes, I love the A’s, but I love baseball more than I love the A’s. You need to appreciate more than just the people you’re familiar with. There are so many stories, records, and stats spread throughout all the teams in the majors, that it is almost doing a disservice to only focus on one team. I suppose if you’re not a fan of baseball, then you won’t be interested. But how can you really be a fan of 1 team, if you aren’t a fan of baseball. Hmmm, maybe that’s too deep for Opening Day.
Well, I suppose, it’s time to put some predictions down:
AL West: A’s
AL Central: White Sox
AL East: Yankees
AL Wild Card: Indians
NL West: Padres
NL Central: Cardinals
NL East: Braves
NL Wild Card: Mets
ALCS: A’s vs. Indians
NLCS: Cardinals vs. Mets
World Series: A’s over Cardinals in 5.
AL MVP: Jim Thome
NL MVP: Albert Pujols
AL Cy Young: Johan Santana
NL Cy Young: Roy Oswalt
AL Rookie of the Year: Kenji Johjima
NL Rookie of the Year: Josh Barfield
Already today Pujols has smashed 2 home runs, Kenji has hit himself a home run (and become the first Japanese catcher in MLB), and Jimmy Rollins has continued his hit streak from last season. Yep, it’ll be a fun season. Remember, last year the ChiSox came from nowhere to lead the AL Central wire-to-wire and win the World Series. Who could it be this year?
